Life expectancy

How long a person born in a given year would live if that year’s death rates held for the whole of their life — a summary of that year’s mortality, not a prediction for anyone born in it.

Method and caveats

Eurostat’s demo_mlexpec series at age “less than 1 year”, which is the expectancy at birth rather than at any later age. Annual and gap-free from 1970. Statistics Lithuania’s own table reaches further back, to the 1958–1959 life table, but until 1989 it publishes pooled two-year periods an annual axis has nowhere to put; where both bodies publish a year they agree, 1990 reading 66.4 and 76.3 here against 66.44 and 76.27 there. The two lines share one chart because the gap between them is the subject. Each year is recomputed from that year’s deaths and can be revised.
