Marriages and divorces

How many marriages and how many divorces were registered in a year. These are counts of events — one marriage is one record, whatever the two people in it — not counts of people and not a share of the population.

Method and caveats

Statistics Lithuania’s marriage and divorce series for the whole country, annual and gap-free from 1945. The marriage figure is every place of registration together: the registry office, the church and marriages contracted abroad. Both series count an event in the year it was registered, which is why the chart draws no ratio series between the two lines — a year’s divorces end earlier years’ marriages, so a line of one over the other would look like a share of marriages ending and be nothing of the kind. Where the home card does divide one year’s two totals, its label says exactly which two numbers it divided. Eurostat publishes the same two counts from 1960 and the figures agree where they overlap.
